Description
This is a looking down into a Red-Barrel Cactus Flower slightly offset. I love the contrast between the red thorns and the golden glow of the delicate yellow bloom. These flowering cacti are among the largest in the North American deserts and can live up to 100 years. The flowers bloom at the top and eventually become delicious fruit feeding all kinds of wildlife - even humans. The genus name “Ferocactus” means fierce or wild cactus. This picture was taken in July of 2018 in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona about 50 miles south of Phoenix.
