Description
Framed by the bare branches of a Palo Verde tree on a winter evening, a gorgeous coyote on the bank of a desert wash pauses for a moment to assess the surroundings. The piercing stare of this wild canid is accentuated by the reflection of infrared light from the night camera on the animal’s tapetum lucidum. The tapetum lucidum is a layer of tissue lying immediately behind the retina of the eye in many vertebrates, and is responsible for their superior night vision. This photo was taken in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona - specifically the northwest corner of Pinal County about 50 miles south of Phoenix
