Description
I do so many coyotes because that is the desert mammal I see most often where I live — a remote, rural location in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona about 50 miles from Phoenix. I am so fortunate and blessed! Anyway, this coyote (Canis latrans) appeared on the evening of February 8, 2019 in front of my remote trail camera, and has probably visited me many times before, and is therefore in many of my other photographs and videos. I have no way of telling. But I can tell you how and why I treat these stills from the footage with artistic enhancement and filters in large part. While it looks like the animal is in a spotlight, this is an illusion created by the infrared technology used in these cameras. The animal’s eyes appear overly-bright due to the infrared light reflecting off the the tapetum lucidum in the corneas of the eyes. The animal might be looking straight at the camera but it’s probably only noticing the few small red LEDs visible from the outside. The resulting capture lacks the higher resolution of daytime photos. Therefore, an artistic enhancement to some degree is necessary to bring out the contrast and the highlights in the imagery. I tinkered with a new filter from Luminar called “Ultraviolet” - hence my cryptic title for this piece!
