Palo verde means “green wood” in Spanish. The wood of this tree is really green, and in the spring time it erupts into a plethora of the most beautiful, yellow flowers. The flowers make bean pods that have served as a source of nutritional food for humans and wildlife alike in the desert southwest of the United States. The photo of this lone palo verde was taken during a hike in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona near my home about 50 miles south of Phoenix in the late spring of 2019.
