Out in northwestern Pinal County near Table Top Mountain (in the background) there struggles an ancient giant cactus (Cereus giganteus) otherwise known as the Saguaro. I named it poor and pretty for a reason. I called it poor because it’s obviously suffered some kind of injury in the past that killed off its head exposing its ribs prematurely. I called it pretty because the deformity is interesting and makes for some unique aesthetically pleasing art I would say, as in this instance. It’s as if it’s trying out a weird new punk-like hairdo or something. Anyway, I think it’s still incredibly photogenic, and a good example showing how parts of the cactus can die before other parts. This is well-known to Sonoran Desert residents who have lived here long enough to suffer the rare freeze in winter.
